Shaun McCarthy is a recognised leader in the field of sustainable business. He was awarded an OBE for services to sustainability and London 2012 by Her Majesty the Queen in her 2013 birthday honours list.
Following a successful 20+ year corporate career in procurement, Shaun left BAA PLC to embark on a career as an independent advisor and business owner in 2006. Since then he has led the development and operation of the world’s first independent sustainability assurance body for a global sport event as Chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 from 2005-13. He was part of the UK Government sustainable procurement task force in 2005-06 which led the development of the BS 8903 standard in 2010 and led the UK delegation to develop ISO 20400 in 2013-17.
He founded Action Sustainability in 2006 where he has served numerous clients as a consultant (2006-), chaired the Supply Chain Sustainability School (2012-) and founded the not for profit knowledge platform www.iso20400.org (2017-)
In addition to these main roles, Shaun was Chair of the IEMA Professional Standards Committee (2016-19), Sustainability Advisor to the Board of Transport for London (2008-16), non-executive advisor to Tarmac (2016-) and a Trustee of the Greenshoots Foundation Trust.(2010-). Following his work on London 2012, Shaun was instrumental in developing the Centre for Sport and Human Rights.
In addition to his OBE, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (FIEMA) and a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (MCIPS).
