About our guest of honor
A natural sportsman, London-born Martin Offiah was a fencer, cricketer and rugby union player at school. After making a name for himself on the Sevens circuit and the Barbarians, he burst into rugby league as a winger displaying incredible pace and try-scoring ability for Widnes. In his debut season, he won the league championship and the premiership, becoming the top scorer that year with 42 tries, a feat that saw him recognised as the 1998 Man of Steel award and secured a place in the Great Britain squad.
He won the championship and premiership the following season and demolished his own club record with 58 tries. For the next few seasons he alternated between Widnes and (now) Sydney Roosters and (now) St George Illawara Dragons, playing during the winter in both the UK and Australia.
